Engagement portraits at the Green Bay Botanical Garden with Abby and Cody

Abby & Cody’s engagement portraits at the Green Bay Botanical Garden.

We originally were doing to do their engagement session in the snow! However, with everyones schedule things just didn’t work out.  So instead we decided on taking their engagement portraits at the Green Bay Botanical Garden.  As I found out, that is the place where they were engaged! I always love going to the place where a couple was engaged for their engagement portraits.

Now to get to know Abby and Cody a little bit better.

Abby and Cody have been madly in love for over 6 years now.

Here is the story of how they met.

“Every year we would go the the Green Bay Garden of lights together because we both really love Christmas and it was something to do together that was different. This past December we went with my dad to the garden. When we got there my whole family (mother, brother, sister, and grandma) were there. At the time I didn’t think anything of it. We walked through the light show and he said to me that he never took any pictures of us together. So we back tracked to the beginning and went to where the little gazebo chapel is. All of a sudden he says that he lied to me and that the Christmas gift he said that was coming later actually came back in October and that he wasn’t surprised all my family was there because he planned it. All of a sudden he got down on one knee and told me that he knew we have been dating for awhile and that he promises he would never lie to me again and he asked me to be his wife!” ?

Our favorite ice cream is:

Cake batter at cold stone and his is pistachio at cold stone

How do you take your coffee?

I actually prefer tea with milk and sugar. Cody on the other hand doesn’t drink any coffee or tea

Our favorite date night is:

We have so many and we love trying new ones. As long as we are with each other we have a great time!

How to choose your wedding DJ

Today I’m interviewing a local wedding DJ Clayton Knapp of Infinity DJ

What are you top 3 tips for how to choose your wedding DJ?

This is one of the most important days of your lives,  not all DJs are the same and choosing a professional with years of actual wedding experience is a must to ensure the best experience.

Find someone you genuinely click with and is willing to sit down to meet with you before booking and before the wedding.

Prepare a list of questions and ask what other services they offer.  If they have more than one service you usually get a discount!

Choose a seasoned professional (that own an actual business, they have a reputation to uphold) with years of not just DJ experience, but real wedding experience. Ask: how many weddings have you performed for and how long?

What are the two biggest mistakes that you see couples making when choosing their DJ?

Not signing a contract to book the date.  Professional DJs use contacts and require a deposit.

Not properly researching wedding professional DJs from amateur DJs. Not all DJs are the same. Professional DJs have a website,  are reachable via email and phone, they also respond quickly to any questions or concerns, they have an easy to fill out worksheet that outlines the day and leaves no one guessing.

What is the most unique thing about Infinity DJ?

Infinity DJ offers years of experience and ability to completely customize a wedding ceremony and reception music.  Going above and beyond to make sure the bride and groom can have the very best experience because it is one of the most important days of their lives. Unmatched attention to the bride and groom to keep the entire reception flowing smoothly, keeping guests happy and everyone entertained.

Any final thoughts?

Choosing a wedding DJ may seem easy, it is unfortunately not an easy task. Anyone can play music,  but choosing just a DJ and a professional wedding DJ is a world of difference.

Infinity DJ prides ourselves on providing an experience unmatched by others.  Because of this we have won Sheboygans best DJ years in a row voted by the readers of the Sheboygan press.
In the end would you rather just have someone that plays music?  Or a professional wedding specialist, catering to your every need that understands and coordinates your entire ceremony and reception so you don’t have to?
That is what you get from Infinity DJ, more than just a DJ, a wedding specialist because we want you to have the best wedding experience.

Contacting Infinity DJ is easy,

How to choose your Wedding Videographer

Today I’m talking to Dave Ottensmen of Open Door A/V.

What are you top 3 tips for how to choose your Sheboygan wedding videographer?

Tip 1:

Choose a videographer that will work with YOU.  Make sure you are clear with what you are looking for, and make sure he/she will work with you on what you want.

Tip 2:

Choose a videographer that enjoys working with other vendors (photographer, venue, etc).  This is crucial as you need each vendor to work as a team to make it successful.

Tip 3:

Choose a videographer that is creative to your needs.  Like photography, video/film is an art.  A good videographer will capture things that are unexpected, and let the day happen as it will, but also create stages that are believable and memorable.

What are the two biggest mistakes that wedding couples make when choosing a videographer?

A videographer may not have the client sign a contract.  This is important as it has legal value to recoup your costs if he/she does not follow through.
Second, a videographer doesn

Engagement Portraits at Veterans Park in Milwaukee, WI with Hannah & Luke

Hannah & Luke’s engagement portraits at Veterans Park in Milwaukee, WI

Hannah and Luke have been madly in love for over 2 1/2 years. Their sisters have been best friends since high school, and they reconnected when Hannah moved to Milwaukee.

I love their proposal story! At Thanksgiving Luke  asked Hannah’s Dad for her hand in marriage. They got in the car to go to his family Thanksgiving. 45 seconds after leaving the driveway he was running through all the ideas of how he could propose and got so excited that he blurted it out. She asked if this was for real, he said yes so she said yes. No ring, nothing fancy. Just a guy who got too excited and couldn’t wait!

Their favorite ice cream is pistachio! And for their coffee, just a little cream. Nothing too fancy unless they have the Girl Scout Samoa flavor at Meijer!

Their favorite date night include: Cooking dinner together, and playing video games afterwards.

For their engagement portraits they chose to go to Veterans park with the Milwaukee skyline in the background. And also one that showed their love of video games.

How to choose your wedding photographer

How to choose your Wedding Photographer

If you are like most engaged couples, you have probably never hired a wedding photographer before. So before you do, go ahead and read some tips about how to choose your wedding photographer.

My first tip would be to look at their work!

Photographers have different styles of photographing weddings. Some photographers have a very traditional style, some do more photojournalistic, and other are more contemporary. And some do a combination of those. Look at a few different photographers websites, and make sure that you enjoy their style of photography before going to meet with them.

Next, meet with them in person.

There are two reasons for meeting with them before you hire them.  First is to see their work in person. Look at more than just their portfolio. Ask to see an entire wedding. Their portfolio has just their best hand picked work.  Second, you need to meet with them to see if your personalities match up. If they are very outgoing and loud, and you are very reserved and laid back, then you will probably not be happy with them on your wedding day.

The photographer that you choose to work with will be spending a lot of time with you on your wedding day. Make sure it is someone that you get along with. If you and your photographer don

Julie & Brian’s outdoor engagement portraits at Maywood

Julie & Brian have their engagement portraits at Maywood in Sheboygan.

The day that we scheduled the session was one of the warmest days on record for February in Wisconsin!

Julie & Brian don’t live in Sheboygan, so they were not sure on the location for their engagement portraits. After reading my article on 5 places for engagement portraits on Sheboygan, they decided that they would like their engagement portraits at Maywood

It was in the upper 50s when we arrived at Maywood. The first place that we headed was the bridge going over the pigeon river. Whenever I go to Maywood for engagement portraits, or for wedding day portraits, the bridge is always a popular spot!

There was some ice in the river, but it was flowing quite nicely. It was a bit strange for the end of February.  After a few shots on and around the bridge, we decided to head up to the maple forrest. There is a nice overlook there where you can see the two ponds, and some of the river as well.

On our short walk to the lookout area we saw the maple trees tapped. There were even some volunteers collecting sap.  One of the great things about Maywood is that they collect sap from the maple trees, and make their own maple syrup! There is even an annual even where they explain and show the entire process.

After the lookout area, we headed back to the ecology center. There is a balcony that overlooks the park. We decided to take a few shots there as well. On our walk over, we talked briefly to one of the volunteers, and they recommended what ended up being our last spot for portraits on the day.

Right in between the parking lot and the ecology center there are a few large rocks, and evergreen trees. That is where we finished up our engagement portraits at Maywood.

The importance of hiring a Professional Wedding Photographer

The Importance of a Professional Wedding Photographer

When researching a wedding photographer, the price may shock you at first. Your first thought may be, “Well everyone has a cell phone these days so we’ll just leave it at that.” You also may think, “My cousin Sandy just got a new digital camera, I’m sure she wouldn’t mind.” But let me tell you what thought didn’t cross your mind.Wedding Bouquet Flowers sitting on Window Sill

Guests with their cell phone, nor your cousin Sandy, has any idea what they are doing.

So maybe Sandy loves photography so much so that she has watched a few YouTube videos. However, she doesn’t have any experience. She doesn’t have the important shots jotted down in the back of her mind because she has never done this before. Granted, she may be smart enough to bring a sticky note with poses and shots written down, but will she actually execute them properly?

The price tag of a professional photographer may come as a shock,

but I guarantee you that whatever the price is, you are getting a bargain. This is because photographers never get paid for everything they put into a wedding. It all starts with their initial interest in photography. They invest in equipment (which could potentially cost more than your entire wedding), they invest in learning and educating themselves (which again, can cost an arm and a leg), and they invest something that is truly priceless–their time.

When your photographer takes you on as a client,

s/he is ready to invest all of her time, love, and energy into your big day. Preparation for a wedding is a very important step that a photographer does, but sometimes the couple doesn’t think about that when hiring her. Starting with a phone/email consultation, to the in-person consultation, to learning about the couple to determine what poses will work best, the photographer puts in countless hours to get ready for your big day.

Bride Sitting on Chair, looking up at her groom.

Once the big day arrives, s/he is attached to you.

S/he will follow you around and make sure s/he gets all of those important shots that s/he has learned to remember. Making sure that everything is photographed with the right settings, the lighting is perfect, and everyone is posed in a beautiful manner. Once again, education and time are a huge factor in the day.White Wedding Dress Details

Now the big day is over, the photographer is still not done working for you.

This is a crucial part for them in their work flow process. It is time to edit the photographs, which sometimes takes days, but often takes weeks. S/he carefully picks out all of the best photographs, hand edits them, and obsesses over every detail until they are absolutely perfect. This is where the most time gets put into making your wedding memorable.Bride and Groom Smiling at each other on their wedding day

    After editing images,

s/he then is ready to meet with you for a print consultation to discuss which prints you would like to order; or s/he starts working on fulfilling pre-arranged print/album orders. After s/he obtains your order at the print consultation, s/he places and then inspects the delivered order. S/he then wraps up the entire process by sending your prints, album, and digital images to you.Wedding Reception Details. Bouquet of flowers on head table. MRS

Now, answer one thing for me:

Will everyone with a cell phone, or your cousin Sandy with her new digital camera, do all of this for you? Will they invest their time, money, and thoughts on you? Will they go above and beyond for you? And use years of education to make sure that every detail is perfect? Even if the answer is yes to most of the above, I can guarantee that the quality of the photos will be nowhere near where they need to be since most people don’t possess years of education.
So take my advice and invest in a good wedding photographer. At the end of the day you only get one wedding. So make sure it is well documented.Wedding Reception Details flowers on table 2

Maegan & Patrick Engagement Portraits Pabst Brewery in Milwaukee, WI

Engagement Portraits at the Pabst Brewery

We had a great time taking Maegan and Patrick’s engagement portraits at the Pabst Brewery in Milwaukee, WI.
I love architecture and history, and I enjoy an occasional good beer as well! So this was a great location for me to photograph at.
Even though I live less than one hour away, and have made many many trips to Milwaukee, I’ve never been to the Pabst Brewery.

Taking the brewery tour has now been moved up on my list of things to do! I’ve heard great things about it. For Maegan and Patrick, they took the tour right before we met for our photo shoot.

Back in September I ran a promotion offering a free engagement session to a select few couples. Maegan & Patrick were the first winners! They chose to have their engagement portraits at the Pabst Brewery in Milwaukee, WI.

Here are a few of my favorite engagement portraits at the Pabst brewery.

I know their wedding is going to be amazing! Thanks for letting me be a part of your journey!
